Gordon enrolled at U-M in 1904 and attended for one year. Lydia Mendelssohn died in 1901, at age 44, leaving behind her husband and two sons, Gordon and Paxton. He would go on to become treasurer and chairman of Fisher Body Corporation just as Detroit’s automotive industry was coming into its own. In 1881, she married businessman Louis Mendelssohn. Lydia Mendelssohn never saw the theater that carries her name.īorn in England to German parents, Lydia Benda emigrated to the United States as a 21-year-old in 1878 she settled in Detroit with an older sister and brother-in-law who had left Europe years earlier.
